The SNAPS schools co-ordinator is Ron Dingwall, who was responsible for setting up our first outing with Toronto Primary School (West Lothian) and for handing over the first schools starter kite kit. Ron is a kite aerial photographer who is totally familiar with the starter kits that are going out to schools. Previously, we have worked with school groups up on Cairnpapple as part of events run by the Ranger Service of Historic Scotland. We have also had outings with Young Archaeologists Clubs from Bath and Bristol to Inverness and Ross and Cromarty. Eric Burton, at Oatridge College, is looking into what can be provided for teachers to support KAP work in schools.

I had hoped to try the KAP Kit No 2 at Stevenston Beach Local Nature Reserve today however a winter storm has put this off to next week. The school group are teachers and Advanced Higher Geography pupils from St Matthew's Academy in Ardrossan who are wanting to do an aerial survey of the transects that they have been doing as part of their psammosere project - ecological transition across a dune system. They are comparing the natural dunes with dunes containing mining waste from the Auchenharvie coal pits.

We had great success at Stevenston Sand Dunes with the micro-video set up. The teachers and pupils were delighted with the results and this is probably the first time that aerial photography has been used for an Advanced Higher investigation. The two transects filmed showed the difference in vegetation between a natural and a post-industrial area on the dunes. The industrial archaeology was clearly visible - viz the old mine site and bing / soil heap.

Great stuff Roger, did you manage to pull any stills out of the video? I am particularly interested in the industrial area.

The pupil/student has extracted stills and will be using them in his report. The old mine etc have shown up very clearly.
I have now used the micro-video at Spier's Old School Grounds with a John Muir Award group who were looking at the site of an 1830s Cholera Pit/Mass Grave. It was a little dark but we seem to have identified the site.

Branching out of West Lothian recently and have Delivered and flown/explained kits to Allans Primary School, Stirling and St David's Primary School in Edinburgh. About to deliver to Newton Primary, Dunblane and Westfield Primary on our doorstep. Flew over Ardentinny Bay last weekend. Hope the military didn't see me as the video showed up Coulport Armament base on opposite shore. Now realise the curse of no wind at times.
